I’m excited about this year’s CENEX LCV 2015 (low carbon vehicle) event as it’s a great opportunity to celebrate the success of low carbon vehicle developments over the past year and more, as well as a look forward to new opportunities.
Exciting times for low carbon vehicles
It’s a really great time to be in the automotive industry, especially if you’re low carbon. In the 8 years we’ve been involved we’ve seen the industry grow to account for 3% of UK GDP and 10% of UK exports. The export value of UK vehicles has more than doubled in value over the past 10 years, indicating the increasing demand and opportunity available for UK products.
New battery technology
At the first we’ll be showcasing several projects we’ve supported. For example a new battery technology for electric vehicles from a UK SME promising significant cost reduction (~30%) compared to Lithium-Ion whilst offering comparable performance and, crucially, significant safety advantages.
Addressing electric vehicle range
We will also be talking about a low-cost range-extender solution for electric vehicles which promises to answer the ‘range anxiety’ concern of electric vehicles whilst being a far simpler & cheaper solution than current plug-in hybrid vehicles.
New tech demonstrator vehicle
We’re also really excited to have a new technology demonstrator vehicle on the stand which will be unveiled on the morning of Day 1.
We’re really lucky this year as we now have two multi-million pound new competitions. A specific session on these two competitions is scheduled on the stand at 12.00 on day 1.
Understanding who to talk to
We know it’s not always easy to know who to talk to so we’ve come up with a graphic to show how we fit together which will be on all the organisations show stands. A key message this year is how we work with our partner organisations such as the Advanced Propulsion Centre, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, Transport Systems Catapult and UK Trade & Investment. We all work together with steering from industry via the Automotive Council.
Japanese Society of Automotive Engineers
Another way we work with our partners is by taking companies to the Japanese Society of Automotive Engineers (JSAE) exhibition and technical conference in May. In 2015 we took 7 companies to Japan to sell their capabilities and products, promoting UK capability at the same time.
The show attracted 80,000 visitors and 400 exhibitors. For a chance to take part in the 2016 visit, please pass on your contact details at the show stand.
See you at the LCV event
I hope you have a chance to come along to the event and if you do, please do come by our stand and say hi.
You can find us at the Innovate UK stand (C3-212) in hall 3. The projects mentioned above (and others) will be on the stand and the team will be on hand to answer questions on how our support works as well as talk through upcoming competitions.
