Meet the team - Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI)

SBRI brings together government challenges and ideas from business to create innovative solutions. The team provides advice and support for challenges across key parts of the public sector including:  heath, defence and security, transport, energy and the environment. Solutions come from any technology sector.

Stephen Browning – Head of SBRI

I joined Innovate UK in 2009. Through SBRI, I help the Government act as a lead customer for innovation – and provide novel solutions to challenges.

After graduating as an Electronic Engineer from the University of Sussex, I spent nearly 20 years working for Philips Semiconductors and NXP Semiconductors, where amongst other things I developed customer – supplier R&D initiatives which have informed my work on SBRI.

Brendan Vickers – SBRI Account Manager

Brendan Vickers – SBRI Account Manager

I joined Innovate UK in 2013 as the SBRI Account Manager responsible for Ministry of Defence, Home Office and Ministry of Justice. Since then, I've helped progress around fifty SBRI challenge competitions.

Previously, I was Managing Director of Pera Innovation's 'Global Knowledge and Enterprise' division.

Jon Hazell, SBRI Account Manager

I joined Innovate UK in 2012 as the SBRI Account Manager responsible for Department for Business Innovation & Skills together with its related agencies and public bodies, Department for Education, The National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research, Food Standards Agency and Scottish Devolved Administration.

In the last 20 years, I've worked mainly in the electronic test and measurement industry. For example, I've been responsible for global sales and marketing in the wireless sector.

Bryan Forbes, SBRI Account Manager

SBRI team - Bryan Forbes

I joined Innovate UK in 2009 as an SBRI Account Manager. I am responsible for supporting Department of Energy and Climate Change, Department for Transport, Department for Communities and Local Government, Department for Work and Pensions and Welsh Government in their use of SBRI.

I graduated from Napier University with a BA in Business Studies. From there, I went on to work in ICT for 25 years, mainly supplying software systems to the public sector.

Cynthia Ugochukwu, SBRI Account Manager

SBRI team - Cynthia Ugochukwu

I joined Innovate UK to provide support to the Department of Health and its agencies.

Previously worked as a post-doctoral scientist in molecular biology.  Most recent role was establishing and overseeing research contracts and innovation support at a large acute NHS Trust. I have an executive MBA from Imperial College London.

Ian Millard, SBRI Account Manager

SBRI team - Ian Millard

I joined Innovate UK in 2014 as the SBRI Account Manager for the Departments for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs; Culture, Media & Sport; International Development; Foreign & Commonwealth Office; Northern Ireland Office; HM Revenue & Customs, and their related agencies and bodies.

I'm also a Member of The Institution of Engineering and Technology, and a Chartered Engineer. After some years working as a design engineer with the Ministry of Defence, I joined the defence industry. From there, I changed industry, taking on a sales role with an SME telecoms network builder.
