G7 - a reminder on innovation

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: Support

As it is announced that the 47th G7 Summit is to be held in the beautiful Carbis Bay, Cornwall, this serves as a reminder, amongst uncertain fiscal times, that the United Kingdom is indeed a centre of global economic excellence.

Now, more than ever is a time to celebrate the innovation that originates from the UK.

Cornwall has been chosen by the Prime Minister as the summit’s themes of climate and environmental action converge in the region. Cornwall in-particular is observing a future in net zero carbon footprint and climate change initiatives for a green industrial revolution.

Cornwall has the ambition to become net zero carbon by 2030, ahead of the Government’s target of 2050. Think lithium exploitation for electric vehicle batteries, geothermal technologies, offshore wind and wave energy, earth observation and space exploration. Cornwall benefits from some of the UK’s best digital connectivity too.

Moving beyond Cornwall and into the Great South West, the region also leads developments in environmental technologies, advanced engineering and microelectronics, health, 5G, agritech, marine technology, screen-based media and cyber.

(Talking of Cyber, the focus of our 24th March Innovate Local event - recording).

UK Innovation

Innovate UK annually supports over £490 million of investments into innovative and scale-up organisations. I hope that G7 enthuses and inspires people to think beyond the current climate and be reminded of our UK excellence in science and innovation. It will provide an opportunity to promote the UK’s innovation on a global scale, (let’s start with the first approved COVID-19 vaccination, supported by UKRI).

The G7 summit in the South West also renews government’s commitment to levelling up and investment into all regions and will certainly raise new ambitions for international collaboration.

Creating a G7 legacy

As I write this in the height of another lockdown, G7 reminds me of the bigger things - the opportunities, the excitement that the future holds. A renewed thumbs up if you like. Quoting Boris Johnson: “Two hundred years ago Cornwall’s tin and copper mines were at the heart of the UK’s industrial revolution and this summer Cornwall will again be the nucleus of great global change and advancement”. It is my aspiration that G7 will create a proud legacy, not just for tourism but for the county to be a perfect location for future entrepreneurialism and innovation.
