As I reflect on a very enjoyable and productive 12 years with Innovate UK, which came after a 38-year engineering career making aircraft and cars better, safer and more economical, I have to ask myself this awkward question, “How can it be that I’ve only just woken up in the last few years to the harsh realities of climate change?”
My team provides a wealth of innovation expertise and experience across a wide range of manufacturing and materials technologies and industrial applications, to accelerate business innovation and sustainable growth. I was instrumental in setting up the High Value Manufacturing Catapult in 2010 and championed the development and launch of the UK’s Additive Manufacturing Strategy for 2018-2025. In 2019. I initiated and led the development of the Net Zero Manufacturing and Materials Strategy, to focus our future innovation investment on this urgent, global priority.
Prior to joining Innovate UK in 2009, my industry career progressed from aerospace to automotive supply chain, rising to Chief Engineer in Rover Group, working with Honda, then BMW, Ford and Jaguar Land Rover, holding Senior Manager roles in Engineering, Product Development, IT Systems and International Manufacturing.
Unless they adopt additive manufacturing by 2025, British companies will not be winners in the global high-value manufacturing race
